Evander
July 2, 2017
Dear Happy Hearts Friends and Supporters:
Sadly, on Saturday, July 1, Happy Hearts Feline Rescue encountered its first case of animal cruelty. A friendly orange and white cat fell victim to a cruel and senseless act. His friendly nature probably enabled the cruel act he was subjected to.
Orange Cat, now named Evander, was rescued in Hillsdale County and surrendered to Happy Hearts Feline Rescue. Upon arrival and examination of his injuries, it was clear he needed immediate medical attention and was rushed to Emergency Animal Hospital in Ann Arbor.
When asked for a prognosis the veterinarian said he would need reconstructive surgery, but that his prognosis was good! The cost of his surgery was $854. Without hesitation Happy Hearts Feline Rescue authorized the necessary surgery.
Hillsdale Police and Animal Control are involved and the matter is under investigation.
Since this expense was neither planned nor budgeted for, any donations to help cover Evander’s surgery would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made:
-via Pay Pal on our website: www.happyheartsfelinerescue.org
-or checks should be made out to the rescue and mailed to the
address above.
Evander, means “good man” in Greek, will make someone a very loving pet; we will make certain he goes to a loving, forever home!
Thank you for your caring and support.
Sincerely,
The Happy Hearts Feline Rescue Board of Directors
UPDATE - August 7, 2017
Evander had two additional visits to the Emergency Animal Hospital and major reconstructive surgery to his rectum. His medical bills total $5,580. We have recovered about $3,300.
When he went for his post-operative checkup, the doctor said he is doing extremely well; healing very nicely and his true friendly, gentle nature is beginning to shine!
Any donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated!
UPDATE - May 1, 2018
Evander underwent major surgery to repair his rectum and surrounding cavities at Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners in Southfield. There was a risk that scar tissue could grow and block his rectum requiring more surgery. The vets estimated 6 months for Evander to fully heal. He did heal without issue. Although he hasn't fully gained tone in his anal muscle, he has about 90% control now. He has put on weight and filled out handsomely.
Thank you to all who supported our mission to help Evander!
UPDATE - May 2021
Evander is now 8 years old and going strong! He is the 'greeter' of all guests that visit our special needs shelter, always looking for pets and attention. He is also social and consoles other kitties in the shelter. He still has some potty issues as a result of his injuries, but overall he is a happy, healthy boy. Everyone at Happy Hearts loves him dearly and are thankful we could save him. We couldn't have such a great shelter resident without the support of all of you as well as the great veterinarians, technicians and surgeons.
