FIP Treatment Protocol
In January 2021, we revised our mission to include cats diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Until recently FIP was not treatable, with a 100% mortality rate. Treatment is now possible, but expensive.
Background
FIP is a mutation of the Coronavirus. Many cats carry the virus and can transmit it through infected feces. Many cats can live with the virus and never develop FIP, but cats with compromised immune systems or after exposure to stress/trauma can develop it.
The medication GS-441524 has shown very positive results for FIP infected cats. However, it also effectively treats Ebola in humans so the American manufacturer is directing all of its capacity to treat Ebola. Also, the FDA has not approved G-441524 for veterinary use. This led to the emergence of a secondary market in Asia.
We have developed a relationship with Mutian in China for GS-441524. They have a well developed manufacturing and control process and a solid US sales presence. The medication is expensive. Medication is administered by weight for a lengthy duration of time given the type of FIP and method of administration.
Options
A FIP infected cat can be surrendered to us to undergo treatment with GS-441524, depending on the type of FIP they have. During the treatment period the cat is carefully monitored via blood work, xrays and veterinarian visits to be sure progress is being made and no other diseases are taking hold.
Happy Hearts bears 100% of treatment costs!
Relapses of FIP can occur, particularly in the case of the neurological form of FIP. However the medication is a huge leap of success in saving the lives of many, many cats.
Options after successful treatment
We hope you will give your kitty the opportunity to survive FIP.
